NEWBURYPORT DISTRICT PERFORMING ARTS DEPARTMENTS
CONCERT ATTENDANCE STUDENT & AUDIENCE EXPECTATIONS
DRESS CODES FOR PERFORMERS
Theatrical performances will have costumes particular to a production. For music concerts, we have a standard dress code of black and white. At each grade level, we expect students to wear attire relative to the level of experience. For instance, students at the Molin are simply asked to have white top and black bottoms. At the Nock, students are expected to show a stronger level of commitment to their musical studies, and therefore should dress a little nicer. At the High School, students are expect to present a professional appearance. Parents / students should speak with their directors when in doubt.

AUDIENCE ETIQUETTE
Ultimately, watching a live performance - whether music concert or a play - is an experience.
Performers and directors have put in hard work to share their stories and journeys with you.
To receive full credit for a concert performance, students are expected to attend the entire length of each concert and display appropriate audience behavior. Any absences or scheduling conflicts must be worked out with the Director prior to the performance.
• Please do not talk, whisper, or make other unnecessary noises during a performance. It is distracting to the performers and other audience members.
• Cell phones and all electronic devices should be silenced or even turned off. Texting, scrolling, or checking email, though silent, is impolite and distracting to the performers and other audience members. Know that students are not permitted to have cell phones or any electronic devices on them during the entirety of the concert evening. Students found possessing any such devices shall have them confiscated to the School’s Main Office
• Please role model presence during the performance. Watch with your eyes not through a screen. We strive to instill mindful and active attention to a live performance. Additionally, recording whether, audio or visual, of a public performance often violates publishers’ copyright laws.
• Applause (clapping) is the traditional way we show appreciation for performers. Yelling, shouting out, and whistling are not appropriate for a School choral/band concert.
• Parents should remain attentive to and fully responsible for any children they bring to the performance. Children, especially younger ones, should not be left to wander, run around, or be otherwise unattended.
• Please remain seated during the musical selections and only enter or exit between musical numbers or groups. Please be on time and plan to stay for the entire performance. We encourage our students to support each other, and when families and friends do the same, it reinforces that message. Know that students are required to remain in their seats for the entire concert when not performing.
• There is no food, gum, or drinks in the auditorium. Please consume such items before entering
We sincerely appreciate your cooperation in following these guidelines. By providing an attentive and respectful audience, we are honoring our students’ hard work and collaborating to instill in them positive and respectful audience etiquette.
